A few more ACFW pics...

Tamera with Ruth Axtell Morren.
I met Ruth for the first time at a professional early bird session prior to the conference. She told me how she and her daughter read Rekindled as they traveled Germany, and how they normally get sick in the car when they read. But that they didn't get sick while reading Rekindled.

Of course...I had FUN with that statement! ;) It was great to meet you, Ruth! And hugs to your sweet daughter!

Jennifer Griffith accepting her well-deserved award for 1st place in the Genesis Contest for unpublished writers for Gumbo Ya Ya! Congrats, Jennifer. So good to see you again!

Tamera with Martha Rogers
, the wonderful woman who blesses us each week on the ACFW Email Loop with the "Verse of the Week."

Kim Vogel Sawyer accepting her award for 1st Place in the Book of the Year Contest for her Waiting for Summer's Return. Kim's a fellow Bethany House author and a great friend. If you haven't read one of her books yet, check her out! In the style of Janette Oke, Kim weaves a tender story of love and romance. You'll love her!

Tamera with Tiffany Stockton (writes as Amber Miller), the pretty redhead who kept the ACFW Conference Bookstore running and jumping!

Tamera with Stacy Hawkins Adams, a very talented writer who publishes with Revell. We shared a booksigning table together. She's a doll!

Tamera with Deborah Vogts. Debbie's a great writer with whom I've had the privilege of being in a critique group in the past. We had a fun time of catching up at the conference. Happy Birthday, Deb!

Tamera with Michelle Shocklee. Michelle has a son who's 6'9''. Who knew!? Michelle and I have known one another for several years as we joined ACFW at about the same time.

More pics later...

Back from American Christian Fiction Writers Conference

I'm back from a wonderful last five days at the ACFW Conference in Dallas. SUCH a fantastic conference and my hat goes off to the conference committee and to Sydney Zeck, Conference Coordinator Extraordinaire, for organizing such a phenomenal event. Next year we'll be in Minneapolis, Minnesota so watch the ACFW website for information as the date approaches!

This conference truly is a--if not the--premiere conference for Christian Fiction in the industry. With over 450 conferees in attendance and with every major publishing house in the CBA represented, not to mention numerous literary agencies, it was quite a gathering. Lots of learning and fellowship going on! I taught a workshop on Dissecting the Novel and truly had a blast.

Here are some pictures. I'll post more during the week. But now, I'm off to bed. Exhausted and glad to be home again.

Away in Dallas...

Thanks for the great response to Tricia's book! She really appreciates it, and we'll have that drawing for her book on Monday!

I'm currently in Dallas at the American Christian Fiction Writers Conference, and am having a great time. I've already met with two writers who signed up for a paid critique with me (waving to Jill and Amy) and look forward to meeting with the rest tomorrow. Plus I teach a workshop on dissecting novels on Saturday and look forward to that. I love to teach!

Let me remind you of the book signing coming up on Saturday. If you live in the area, I'd love to see you (as would a slew of other authors)! Click here for more details.

Here's a quick snapshot of me with two new writer buddies I met tonight following dinner, Sherrie Ashcraft and Christina Berry (mother and daughter, no less!):

More pics coming! But I've got an early morning meeting tomorrow and am heading to bed! I'm rooming with that cantankerous Deborah Raney and she just wouldn't stop talking last night! And I did everything in the world to discourage her!

And if you believe that... ;)

Glimpses of Deeper Still, and NOT pretty in pink!

Last weekend, Polly Alexander (my college roommate) and I attended the Deeper Still Conference together and had a blast! I promised a picture of us from that event, AND one from years past.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize how blurry the picture taken last weekend was (the 64 ounce cup of coffee in the young girl's hand should have been a tip off), but here it is anyway! ;)

And I still haven't unpacked everything from the move this summer, groan, so it took me a while to find the pictures from the boxes.

But here are pics of Polly and me from...ahem...a few years ago.

Polly and me at her Wedding
Polly, why oh why did you made me wear pink--PINK, with my hair!! I have no clue. And look at that hair style! Oh my gracious...

And here we are from college days visiting Heber Springs in Arkansas. Gorgeous place! As soon as class was over, we'd head out there to play.

It's wonderful to be close to Polly again after all these years. Don't tell our husbands but we're planning a weekend trip to the Biltmore. I've never been and hear it's wonderful.

Actually, it might be fun to take the guys with us this time. We'll see...

Even if you’re not a sushi lover, Camy Tang’s new book, Sushi for One?, is a chick-lit promising a tasty kick of wasabi-laced romance and humor.
Check out Sushi for One?

Lex Sakai’s family, big, nosy, and marriage-minded, is ruled by a crafty grandmother. When her cousin Mariko gets married, Lex will become the OLDEST SINGLE COUSIN in the clan, a loathed position by all single female family members.

Lex has not dated for years. Grandma homes in on this fact and demands, bribes, and threatens Lex to bring a boyfriend (not just a date) to her cousin’s wedding. Lex does not want to date ... not since that terrible incident a few years back ... but, Grandma doesn't give her that choice.

Lex's options are slim because she has used her Bible study class on Ephesians to compile a huge list of traits for the PERFECT man (and the more she dates, the more she adds to the list).

The one man she keeps running into (and is completely attracted to) doesn’t seem to have a single quality on her list. It’s only when the always-in-control Lex loses control and lets God take over that all the pieces of this hilarious romance finally fall into place.

Camy, tell us a little about your writing journey!
I’ve always loved writing, but my attitude wasn’t the greatest. I was more interested in my name on a book cover than in giving God glory. So, God asked me to lay down my writing.

At first I thought He was nuts, but once I realized He was serious about it, I fought Him long and hard over it. Eventually, I did it—laid down my writing, stopped cold turkey. Set my manuscript away (all 500+ pages of my epic fantasy novel that was going to take the world by STORM!).

I went into biology research—probably as far from fiction writing as I could go—and made up stories in my head, but never wrote anything down. Then, I got laid off from work and out of the blue, God gave me the green light to start writing again.

I completed five novels before I sold number five. The first two were VERY BAD. The next three were definitely much better. :) Now, my debut novel, Sushi for One (manuscript #5), is releasing this month! I’m totally excited. My husband is so proud of me—holding that book in his hands affirmed to him that this really is what God wants me to do.

Check out Camy's website for more info about her and current contests she's running!

From a Distance turned in...

Many of you have written asking what's coming next from me...

And I wanted to tell you that I just turned in the first draft of From a Distance yesterday. From a Distance, Book 1 in Timber Ridge Reflections releases in the spring and will be followed by two more books in that series in coming months.

Now I'm waiting expectantly for my editor's input--which is always excellent!--and still have a lot of writing to do yet before the story is finished. So while I'm working on From a Distance, I'm also catching up on some manuscripts I'm reading for possible endorsement (I'll give you a sneak peek at those when I'm done), and I'm getting ready to head to Dallas in two weeks for the American Christian Fiction Writers annual conference.

We're having a public book signing on Saturday, September 22 in Dallas (1:30 - 2:30 p.m.). Check out the flier below for more information. If you live near by, please consider stopping in and saying hello. I'd love to see you and so would James Scott Bell, Brandilyn Collins, Deborah Raney, DeeAnne Gist, and so many other authors.

Latest in Christian Fiction - Angela Hunt

Check out this newest release from friend Angela Hunt! A guaranteed winner!

How do you live when God asks you to bury a dream?
Jennifer Graham, the no-nonsense chief of staff for a Virginia senator, quits her job after her divorce—and finds herself an unemployed single mom. Forced to live with her mother until she can find work on Capitol Hill that does not involve her gregarious ex-husband, her efforts are stymied until she learns that she has inherited a funeral home in picturesque Mt. Dora.

Jennifer journeys to the small Florida town with her two sons and her mother, never dreaming that within a mortuary she will uncover mysteries of love and life.

Reader Reviews:

"Doesn't She Look Natural?" proves the point that Angela Hunt is one of the most versatile authors writing today. Hunt can bring her readers up close and personal to any emotion common to the human heart, and she does just that in her latest release. With her trademark lovable, multifaceted characters and flawless, unpredictable storytelling, she allows us to view life through a lens that ranges from humor to pathos, from dreams to grit, from anger and frustration to courage and hope. I loved these people. I loved this book."
---BJ Hoff, author of the Mountain Song Legacy series, the American Anthem series, and An Emerald Ballad.

When an unexpected twist in life turns Jen upside down and shakes her, she gathers the spilled change from her pockets and begins anew. Hurt by the unwelcome death of her marriage, she nevertheless allows God to begin to heal her and breathe new life into her circumstances. A heroine to cheer for and identify with and an endearing ensemble of well-meaning but meddling mothers, sweetly persistent new friends and a few men who remember how to be honorable round out a light-hearted read that is simply to die for.
--Sandra Byrd, author of Let Them Eat Cake and other novels.

Doesn't She Look Natural is a wonderful change of pace for Angela Hunt. While still dealing with timely and serious subject matter, Angie does it with a refreshing breath of humor. Realizing that God is still in control of every situation of life (and death), the reader is shown a lighter side of circumstances that lifts the soul from the pit of despair and gives it hope in what lies ahead. The little snippets of so-true-to-life Red Hatter escapades are a special added treat, especially for the other-side-of-fifty genre who will be enjoying this book. And I should know, being the real and original Queen Snippy! This is a truly delightful book that you will not be able to easily put down! Can't wait for the next two books in this heart-warming series!
--Tanzel Rousey, aka Queen Snippy, Red Hat Society of Heavenly Daze

Quick chat with Angie:

How did you come up with the concept for Does She Look Natural?
I read HEAVEN by Randy Alcorn and naturally began to think about the life to come. I’ve also lost several friends over the last couple of years, and I’ve come to realize that death, for the believer, is not to be feared. I thought a series about a funeral home might be a good way to address issues affecting the living and those who are facing death.

Is any part of Does She Look Natural factual?
Jennifer Graham and her family are completely fictitious, but Mt. Dora is a real place.

How closely is this Does She Look Natural based on your life and your practice?
There are bits of every author’s life in every story he or she produces, but I am happily married with two older children. I’ve never been a mortician, but I’ve always been interested in all things medical.

How long did Does She Look Natural take you to complete?
About the average length of time for me—four or five months.

Do you have a favorite character? And why?
I’m a little partial to Bugs, Jennifer’s five-year-old son. He says the cutest things . . .

How much research did Doesn't She Look Natural take?
Quite a bit, and this is just the beginning of the series. In the second book, Jen goes to mortuary school, and by the third book she is actively operating the funeral home. So I’ve had to learn quite a bit about funeral homes, caskets, supplies, embalming, burial versus cremation, etc.

What are some of the challenges you face as an author?
I think all authors face the same challenges—the need to place ourselves in a chair and stay there until the work is done, the challenge of staying fresh in the face of many revisions, and the challenge of wearing entertaining stories and spiritual truths. People looking for the former aren’t always looking for the latter.

Are there any other new projects on the horizon?
Of course! I still have to write the third Fairlawn book, She’s in a Better Place, and I’m working on another thriller called The Face.

Who has influenced you the most with your writing?
It’s be impossible to name one single person—I had a sixth grade teacher who complimented my writing before I had any inkling that I might be any good at it, and Pastor Derric Johnson suggested that I switch from music to writing as a career. And at Tyndale House, it was Ken Peterson who suggested that I move from children’s books into adult fiction. You might say that God has frequently spoken to me through the voices of my friends.

What advice would you give to a person trying to become a novelist?
Read, read, read. And then get to a good writer’s conference where you can learn from people who are actually doing the work.

What message would you like your readers to take away from Does She Look Natural?
I would like readers to see that God is always leading us . . . even when we don’t like the direction in which we’re moving. And when God moves us, He supplies our needs . . . sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

What is your goal or mission as a writer?
My goal in life is simply to love and obey God. Right now I’m doing that by writing the stories He places on my heart.
Visit Angie's website to learn more about her.
